Ford is running a tv ad for a car with no distinguishing characteristics--at least, none that made an impression on me. The ad begins with a close-up of an iPod, from which fairy dust seems to emanate, floating through the scene until it lands in the car. Announcer makes a comment about the need for "spirit" or something close--I've only seen it once.
In effect, an iPod was providing a celebrity endorsement for the car--presumably without compensation (I presume this because Apple would, in my opinion, see this brand association as diluting their franchise.) It's an inverse product placement--call it brand theft--auto. While it seems impossible that the law would protect the image of a manufactured everyday object as it does the image of, say, a movie star, it's hard to rule out, given the zeal for walling up IP.

I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on TV.
Of course Apple could stop them if they chose to. It implies an endorsement--it's not like Ford is saying, "Free ipod with every car", which would be a smart idea now that you mention it.
I missed the Asimov reference, though.
Isaac once told me that he was afraid to fly. I was stunned and I asked him what he was going to do about it. He said, "I believe in the conservation of fear. If I get over my fear of flying, I'll just be afraid of something else... like women."

It's interesting that an ipod is so iconic that it doesn't carry it's
own name on the front. So where is the line between brand infringement
and resonable use? If you didn't know the ipod was an ipod, would this
be an issue? And by the way, have you seen the marketing spoof on what
happens when "Microsoft redesigns ipod packaging"? If not look at:

"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discovery, is not 'Eureka' (I found it!), but 'That's funny...' " - Isaac Asimov.
