Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not having a good time making my posts look any good. Either their just a block o' text or they have ugly, embarassing, unexecuted code. What is the nomenclature for this forum? Can I use html tags? There's no preview/edit functionality, so I have no way of seeing even what the code is behind the links above. I hope the links are accurate and I didn't misspell anything.
  • Once I hit submit, there's no editing...
Any chance of a preview function or a sandbox like at wikipedia?

Frymaster, first of all thanks for the questions/ideas (as well as for your good posts, typographically challenged as they are)....

Truth is, I need to confer quickly with the FutureMonitor tech squad (a dashing bunch, and always helpful) in order to give you the answers you deserve--so I'll do that and come back here with the results.

Three quick things, though:

1. I'm guessing you've been writing your posts elsewhere and then copying/pasting into the "reply" box, no? Usually that's when code symbols get unwittingly imported. We at FutureMonitor should write up solid, simple instructions for how to copy and paste without bringing the symbols along. I'll do that.

2. The typographical options when posting directly into the reply box have been limited intentionally (to bold, italics, and underscore) because of what can happen in a forum when all manner of fanciness is possible. (A debacle, is what can happen.) Still, we want to provide enough tools for good expression. Do you think we're missing some that are important?

3. LOVE the sandbox idea, also the preview function. We'll look into that and see what it will take to build it in. We're advancing on what feels like a hundred fronts at once right now, so we can't make promises about how/when we'll add functionality--but thank you for the idea. It's a good one.

Michael

I'm no cutter-and-paster-er. Those tags were hand-coded in Pawtucket, RI in the hope that they would work as they usually do in forum-type interfaces. FM, I surmise thus far, works on straight HTML tags like these:<br><br>which is "open pointy bracket," the letters br, "close pointy bracket" twice. If they don't appear, that means they worked.Really, the only formatting item left out of your toolbar is the line break. For you home gamers, the code is "br" in pointy brackets twice.<br><br>Unless you see those tags, in which case, I look like a moron. Now to post without preview nor possibility to edit or delete. Always fun.<br><br>Thanks for the help and the forum.

Here's a snippet of your reply to me in code view. You can see the tags and compare with your original post above to see how it renders."It's a good one.<BR><BR>Michael<BR><BR>"Here's a snippet of my post -- which looks identical (upper/lower case shouldn't matter) -- looks like this in code view:"Always fun.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Thanks for the help and the forum."Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?FWIW, I'm using Firefox on an Apple iBook running Tiger (10.4), although, I don't think it's a browser deal.

Fry, mea culpa re the cutting-and-pasting, my friend. I'm projecting--on account of the next time I personally "code" something will be the first. (Yeah, I'm gonna do something about that.)

Thanks for the extra info about what you're trying to do and how you're trying to do it. Obviously I'm not the exact man for this exploration, but I know the people who are, and I'll be back with info that has a chance of actually being useful.

Thanks for the intell....................Michael

Okay, now this is better....
And includes a FIX

Frymaster, here’s a better reply to your concerns, plus A FIX that’ll at least partially solve the problem.

--The FIX is that, though we’ll need to do development work to build a “preview” function, we’ll enable you to edit your posts (might take a day or two to implement throughout the site, but it’ll be functional very soon). That way a poster will be able to instantly revise his entry if he doesn’t like how it looks or reads.

--As for coding, I can now explain that the way the post editor has been implemented is that it’s a WYSIWYG editor. If you press the “enter” key, that will equate to a tag when posted. Additional html formatting is available by using the toolbar at the top of the entry box. You can highlight text and make it bold, italic, underscored, or bulleted, and you can insert links--all will be rendered as html when posted.

--Re manually coding html as you’ve done in previous posts, the editor is designed to treat everything posted as text--so html will be posted as plain text, it won’t be rendered. Hope this helps. And thank you again for calling out the problems. As for the “sandbox” idea, we’re going to start working on that.

Michael

If this is the case, then I'm pretty sure that my WIS is not WIG. Two return/enters above. Two enter keys above. What I see is three, now four separate lines separated by a return. Let's see what I get.

Edit button! Yea! 'Hanx! Does this appear on a separate line indicating the line break function works? Let's see.
  • I guess not. But using the snazzy edit function, I can go back in and change my post!

Standards for any forum are Edit (which is good to see you added), delete and preview.  New lines from 'enter' are not working very intuitively for me either.I made a post a few minutes ago and it also turned into a huge wall of text :(as an aside, yes i make smily faces often, but i despise the actual pics of smily faces... brackets and colons are more fun :P

Belated thanks for getting the line breaks to work. Very stylish, indeed!
