The FutureMonitor pair-wise sort is a way to identify what network members collectively think is important to discuss. The set of 10 subjects/questions included in each week-long sort (longer during beta) is drawn from suggestions by network members or from discussions throughout the site.
Please suggest your subjects or questions for future pair-wise sorting here in this thread. You can propose them with as little as a phrase or as much as an argument. Join in!

Software is ubiquitous in our economy -- its in our homes, automobiles, cell phones, pacemakers... etc...

In the recent past there have been noted software failures in our communications, viz., AT&T's network failure in the late '90s --

Outside of the typical failures, we continue to worry about viruses, spyware, hacking etc...

How should businesses who depend on the uptime of their software deal with
1) the downtime posed by just typical software failures...
2) the downtime posed by intentional software failures, viz., viruses, spyware, security threats, etc...

lukebattye, thanks for posting this, love the subject.

(And haven't we already seen VR-like inroads made by retailers who "walk" us through their stores online, carmakers who let us "drive" their cars digitally, and various companies who enable us to virtually "model" prospective clothing purchases or try out new haircolors? All those are a far cry from true VR, though. Do they even count?)

BUT, I'd sure love you to re-post this question over in the "Emerging Topics" forum, which is a better home for it right now. OR, if you want to think about this as a poll (and it might make a good one), then imagine 3 or 4 answers to your question and post them back to us. For now, we won't be sorting open-ended questions because there's not enough traffic to ply through them in the pair-wise mechanism.

Let me know what you want to do. And grazie, again, for the submission.

michael

rikkar, good topic. Can I ask you, as I did lukebattye above, to repost it as a new topic in the "Emerging Topics" forum, which is a good place to put open-ended "how-should" questions to the sensing network. And it looks like what you've done is ask a series of "how-should" questions, each/any of which could merit a response.

But we could make a poll out of it, too, possibly--if you're curious which kind of software failure businesses are expecting to have to deal with in the near future. The "typical" kind of problem? Or the digital security-related ones?

What do you think?

Thank you for the post.

michael
